OK Kamala CALM a la, what would you say to Calvin Coolidge?
Dad would have celebrated his 98th birthday today, July 25, 2024 and so...
It is Dad’s birthday this morning and I am quite CALMLY drinking coffee and thinking about my wonderful father, how he would have been 98 years old today — almost a CENTURY. He passed in August of 2019 and we miss him like crazy.
Anyway, I found myself asking:
Who was PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES 98 years ago? Calvin Coolidge! And before you know it I am googling Calvin and then I think:
HOLY CALM a la MOLY
what would Calvin think of a
BLACK WOMAN like CALM a la running (and probably winning) the Presidency? How would that sit with him? And how would it sit with his very odd wife,
Grace Coolidge? (More on her in another post!)
The next thing you know I am reading these weird quotes on my phone first from Calvin, and then one by his wife, and it hit me that maybe if CALVIN and CALM a la had met in the OVUM pardon me :)
in the OVAL OFFICE, picture it, CALVIN AND CALM a la
sitting side by side in back in 1926, when my dear old Dad was born,
in that very office where President Joe Biden gave his farewell address to the nation the other night.
FIRSTLY, it is important to note that women had won the vote ONLY SIX YEARS before, when the 19th Amendment was passed — 72 years after the first women’s rights convention took place in Seneca Falls, New York.
Significantly, however, BLACK WOMEN didn’t get to vote in 1920
that’s right, wom(b)en
like CALM a la HARRIS, because of racist barriers in the South, blocked almost all BLACKS FROM VOTING.
It wasn’t until President Lyndon Johnson got the Voting Rights Act passed in 1965,
FORTY FIVE YEARS LATER, that those racist barriers started to be torn down.
So, the more I thought about it, Calvin and Calm a la, sitting there in the OVUM, I mean the OVAL OFFICE in 1926, the year of my Dad’s birth, most likely, on some very very important issues, like RACE and WOMEN’S RIGHTS, and REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS in particular
they sure wouldn’t exactly see eye to eye!
I am 71 years old, which is MUCH closer to a century than I would prefer it be :)
If you happen to be an OLDY like me, maybe this has happened to you: just about the time I turned 70, in November, 2022, in the very same month my beloved grandson Monte was born in Colorado, at that moment in time,
time actually got slippery for me. I will have a lot more to say on this subject of TIME…
but for now…
Meanwhile, HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY 98th BIRTHDAY Dear Dad, I miss you so much, I feel you with me NOW and I am so grateful, sono cosi gratto, that thinking about your birthday today helped me to begin to unlock some crucial CALM a la history!
It is amazing to me how recent all this HERstory really is! When your Dad was born it would have been unthinkable to have a Black/Asian Woman running for president. However we still must continue moving forward.
